Oscars 2020: Brad Pitt responds to speculation he used a ...

BRAD PITT:

‘You shouldn’t speak until you know what you’re talking about. That’s why I get uncomfortable with interviews. Reporters ask me what I feel China should do about Tibet. Who cares what I think China should do? I’m a fucking actor! They hand me a script, I act. I’m here for entertainment. Basically, when you whittle everything away, I’m a grown man who puts on make-up.’

Jill Schoelen from Brad Pitt's Dating History | E! News UK

Brad & ex-fiancee Jill Schoelen

[On being dumped by ex-fiancée Jill Schoelen in 1989] ‘She called me up in Los Angeles and was crying on the phone. She was lonely and there was a huge drama. At this point, I had $800 to my name and I spent $600 of it getting a ticket from Los Angeles to Hungary to see her. I got there, went straight to the set where she was filming and that night we went out for dinner. She told me that she had fallen in love with the director of the film. I was so shocked I said, ‘I’m outta here.’ I spent my night in Budapest, sitting on a bench, smoking, with just a local bum to talk to who couldn’t speak English. These are the days and nights you remember when you have success. I returned to America absolutely broke. This is why recognition does not bother me too much.’

ELLE MACPHERSON:

‘Nudity has never been an issue for me – I’m Australian. It’s more of a thing in America. I mean people can buy guns, yet it’s against the law to be topless on the beach.’

STEVE MARTIN:

‘I love money. I love everything about it. I’ve bought some pretty good stuff. Got me a $300 pair of socks, got a fur sink. Let’s see, bought an electric dog polisher, a gasoline-powered turtleneck sweater, and, of course, I bought some dumb stuff, too.’

Old Hollywood, Mon Amour — 1939: Marlene Dietrich and Una Merkel ...

Marlene (L) & Una on the ‘Destry’ set

[On her screen fight with Marlene Dietrich in Destry Rides Again (1939)] ‘Well, it was very funny. I had never met Miss Dietrich until that day, and they outlined exactly what places they’d like us to hit on the set. We were not supposed to do anything but a few feet, and they had the stunt girls there to take over. But Mr. Marshall said, ‘Once you get started on this, just keep going as long as you can; don’t worry. The camera will follow you’. We did the whole thing, and we turned our checks over to the stunt girls! We did the whole battle, and then at the end Jimmy Stewart came over and dumped a pail of water over our heads. We had to do it over again for close-ups, and do it for Life magazine…I went to the hospital after that picture. I finished it, but I was a mess of bruises, because I had little fat heels on, and Marlene had high spiked heels. All through the fight scene we were whispering to each other, ‘Are you all right?’ ‘Can you finish it?’ ‘Are you OK?’ We did it in one continuous take. I thought they’d never call ‘Cut!’

Jon Polito, 65

JON POLITO:

[Speaking about the on-set behaviour of Marlon Brando in The Freshman (1990)] ‘Brando was to stay an extra week. And he had been there for the full six to eight week shoot. And he asked for another million dollars and he was told no. He said, ‘If you don’t pay me this extra million dollars, then I will bad-mouth this film.’ And they still said no. The next day he came out and all the papers are saying it’s the worst film he’d ever been involved with. They paid him the million dollars the following day and the day after that, he came out and said he loved doing the film! He was ready to do the sequel. That’s Brando. That was Brando in a nutshell. Really very funny. Very powerful. Don’t mess with that man.’

Cool hand Paul: Peter Bradshaw on why Paul Newman devoted his life ...

PAUL NEWMAN:

[Regarding his salad dressing] ‘When I realized I was going to have to be a whore, to put my face on the label, I decided that the only way I could do it was to give away all the money we make. Over the years, that ethical stance has given us a 30% boost. One in three customers buys my products because all the profits go to good causes and the rest buy the stuff because it is good. The embarrassing thing is that my salad dressing is out-grossing my films.’

‘I’m a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter, either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being…by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list it is irrelevant.’

Hud (1963) - Rotten Tomatoes

‘The first time I remember women reacting to me was when we were filming Hud (1963) in Texas. Women were literally trying to climb through the transoms at the motel where I stayed. At first, it’s flattering to the ego. At first. Then you realize they’re mixing me up with the roles I play – characters created by writers who have nothing to do with who I am.’

Il plaide coupable pour rapports sexuels illégaux

ROMAN POLANSKI:

[The 44 year-old’s first interview given to Martin Amis in Paris following his flight from a sodomy and statutory rape conviction of a 13 year-old girl and certain imprisonment in the USA in 1977] ‘When I was being driven to the police station from the hotel, the car radio was already talking about it. I couldn’t believe…I thought, you know, I was going to wake up from it. I realise, if I have killed somebody, it wouldn’t have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But…fucking, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to fuck young girls. Juries want to fuck young girls. Everyone wants to fuck young girls!’

WILLIAM POWELL:

[When asked to describe his methods for keeping fit and in shape, the affable Bill Powell had this to say]: ‘I give my swimming pool a long and piercing look every morning. I think a lot about tennis and talk a good deal about golf. I find I keep fit best by worrying about what I’m going to do next.’
